Recent terrorist attacks, conducted or inspired by ISIS, such as the coordinated attack in Paris and “unsophisicated attacks” by radicalized individuals in Nice and Orlando, Florida highlight the increasing security risk to festivals and events.  Event organizing committees with their Police and Public Safety partners face an uncertain environment of evolving security and safety risks, and the challenge of how to balance these risks against attendee experience and increasing pressure on budgets.

Industry best practices, duty of care, and in some instances, Host City and insurance obligations require that event and festival organizers have event safety and security management plans and risk management plans in place.  An effective event risk management process provides a balanced approach to preventing the risks that can reasonably be controlled, learning to recognize the ones that can’t be prevented, being prepared to limit consequences or damage to brand and reputation and, having the appropriate resources to recover quickly (business continuity) from an incident or crisis.
